Animal Husbandry:

The students are given hands-on experience of

  • Handling

  • Grooming

  • Basic Health Care

  • Mucking out

  • Assisting the vet and farrier

  • Health & Safety

Horse Care

All of the above, plus

  • Tacking up

  • Mounting/Dismounting

  • Learning how to apply rugs, bandages, boots and equipment to the horse

  • Road sense

  • Leading, lunging and exercising the horse

  • Care and cleaning of tack

  • Feeding

  • Basic riding skills  (walk and trot)

Wildlife/Rural living

  • Planting and maintaining the wildlife area

  • Growing food such as potatoes, tomatoes, onions

  • Peas

  • Breeding and studying small tortoiseshell and peacock butterflies

  • Knowing where and how our food comes from the field to the table

Land Management

  • Cleaning pasture

  • Removing plants poisonous to animals

  • Fencing

  • Seeding and fertilising

Woodland Walks, Bug Hunts and Nature Trails

This is a great way to encourage team work and  allows students to use some of the skills they have learnt identifying birds and trees.

It teaches respect for the countryside and is very good for clearing and calming an active mind!
